Downtown St Petersburg is a popular port of call for sailors and mariners. Second only to Fort Lauderdale in the number of moorings and services. It is, however, more sailing oriented, and thus the moniker "America's Sailing City".

The Don Cesar Beach Resort
aka "The Don" is an historic large scale resort hotel property that sits imposingly on the beach and can be seen for miles: an historic landmark as well as geographic. Inspired by the great resorts of Palm Beach, Boca Raton and Coral Gables, the builders of this hotel completed work on their "Pink Castle" in 1928. Pop icons of the Gatsby era were frequent guests. Wanted or unwanted, the Don was converted into a military hospital during WWII and administered by the Veterans Administration in the years after - the same fate as the Biltmore in Coral Gables. The Salvador Dali Museum
This museum houses the largest collection of genius-gone mad artist Salvador Dali outside of his native Spain. Soon to be expanded location to be completed in early 2011. Walk through the life of this famous and influential man by means of his work -preferably by guided tour - and be the judge yourself: mad man, or genius - or both. 1000 Third St.
Fort De Soto Park
This impressive site at the entrance to Tampa Bay and at the southernmost point of Pinellas County features seven miles of pure white sand - much of which is rather secluded - encompasses over 1,100 acres including five islands. Historical Fort, many recreation concessions, bike trails, roller blade and hiking are popular land sports. Entrance is free, but bridge tolls may apply. At the end of Route 679 - I-275 exit 17 to 682west, then on to 679.
The Pier
This iconic site defines downtown St Petersburg. The five-story, inverted pyramid houses the Pier Aquarium, numerous restaurants, attractions, and outfitters of boating and fishing gear and tours. Second Avenue - due east.
Gulf Beaches Historical Museum
This small-scale museum focuses attention to the history and peoples who explored, settled, developed and came to call these barrier islands home. Located in the first church to be built on the islands. 115 10th Ave in St. Pete Beach.
